- Dogs staying in Switzerland: microchip check by a Swiss vet and AMICUS registration within 10 days of entry (not for holiday visits). — Bundesamt für Lebensmittelsicherheit und Veterinärwesen BLV
- A pet that already holds a valid Swiss/EU passport with a valid rabies vaccination (e.g. a Swiss or EU resident coming back from a holiday) does not need the certificate: the rule for returning residents applies. — Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office FSVO
- Preparation time 4 weeks: microchip + rabies vaccine at ≥12 weeks, valid 21 days later; certificate issued or endorsed within the last 10 days before a direct flight.
No quarantine when the paperwork is in order
If the pet does not meet the rules: No quarantine regime exists for compliant pets. A non-compliant pet arriving by air from a third country is refused by the border veterinary service; if it cannot be sent back at once it is isolated at the owner's risk and may be seized and destroyed if not re-exported within ten days. At land borders the cantonal veterinary authority may order return, seizure or destruction. The owner pays all costs.

Transit and stopovers
- Airside transit by direct air: the destination country's rules apply. Pets that land in Switzerland and continue by another means of transport, or that cross Switzerland by land, must meet the Swiss import rules. — Swiss Federal Council (Fedlex)
Return trip to Australia
Hard for a returning pet (no separate returning-resident rule; standard import rules apply), about 30 weeks of preparation. Quarantine: at least 30 days at a government quarantine station.
- Rabies antibody (titer) test — the blood draw must happen before you leave, so plan it into the outbound trip: RNATT by FAVN or RFFIT, ≥0.5 IU/ml, sample taken by a government approved vet in an approved country between 12 months and 180 days before export; export at least 180 days after the sample arrives at the lab; valid 12 months from sampling.
- Waiting period — 180+ days after the lab receives the sample: Export no earlier than 180 days after the RNATT blood sample arrives at the laboratory — no exceptions (a residency period, not quarantine). Counted from the lab's receipt date, not the sampling date.
- Residence period — 180+ days before departure: Continuously resident in approved countries for at least 180 days immediately before export.
- Import permit: BICON permit applied for after the RNATT declaration, with the lab report and declaration; 20–40 business days typical, up to 123; valid until the RNATT expires.
- Quarantine booking: Book Mickleham PEQ after the permit is granted; airline "OK to Forward" approval before departure.

- The destination country's rules apply; a veterinary certificate for export is issued by the cantonal veterinary service. Check the re-entry conditions before leaving — in particular the titer test before a trip to a rabies-risk country.
- Export to EU states, Iceland and Norway follows the same rules as import (passport, chip, vaccination) plus any extra requirements of the destination.
