Prep time about 5 weeks

Quarantine: at least 14 days at a government quarantine station. Needs quarantine booking, import permit, microchip, residence period, rabies vaccination, disease test, parasite treatment, clinical examination, health certificate, transport rules, port of entry and arrival inspection.

Timing assumes an adult pet; young or unvaccinated pets may face other rules.

Always confirm with the destination's official authority and your airline before travelling.

Entry requirements

Tap the seal to stamp a step done.0 OF 14 STAMPED

The same preparation as for dogs from the no-quarantine list, but with no rabies exemption. On arrival the dog spends about 14 days in state quarantine at Kempton Park (Johannesburg) or Milnerton (Cape Town) and is retested at the owner's expense. The quarantine place must be booked, and an indemnity form signed, before the permit is applied for. Dogs can arrive only through O.R. Tambo or Cape Town.

01
Quarantine booking
before travel

Book a place at the state quarantine station FIRST: Kempton Park (Johannesburg) or Milnerton (Cape Town). The quarantine officer at the port of entry makes the reservation and completes the booking part of the dog form "subjected to quarantine". Sign the indemnity form: the booking is confirmed only once the station has the signed form, and the original is handed in at the station. The permit is issued only once the booking is confirmed.

If no SMS or e-mail has come two weeks after applying, phone the permit office.

Official sources differ — the gov.za services page gives 3–5 working days after approval; the Department's own document gives 5–10 working days.

No official source says the chip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination. Some agents say so, but it is not a stated rule.

04
Residence period
6+ months before departure

The health certificate states that the dog has lived in the exporting country since birth, or in the exporting country or South Africa for the last 6 months. The sources do not say what happens to a dog that moved more recently; ask the permit office before applying.

UK guidance says South Africa can grant a dispensation that shortens the 30-day wait to 15 days. The Department's own documents do not mention it. A dispensation letter costs R420.

06
Disease test
within 30 days before arrival

Blood tests with NEGATIVE results for five diseases. The samples must be taken within 30 days before arrival. Any government-approved laboratory accredited for these tests can do them, in any country, or the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in South Africa. The report must be in English. Only these methods are accepted. Brucella canis: serum agglutination or rapid slide agglutination. Trypanosoma evansi: card agglutination test AND Giemsa blood smear. Babesia gibsoni: IFAT or ELISA (BgTRAP antigen) AND Giemsa blood smear or real-time PCR. Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis): microfilarial filtration test; Knott's test is not accepted. Leishmania: IFAT, ELISA, direct agglutination or Western blot. Since October 2017 a statement that the country is free of a disease no longer replaces the test. A dog that tests positive cannot be imported.

Dogs from the USA: the surra (T. evansi) tests must be done at one of the two WOAH reference laboratories (Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, or Obihiro, Japan). The other tests go to an approved US laboratory.

Dogs from Canada — the surra test is not available in Canada; use an international laboratory.

Any change to a test method or to the 30-day timing needs a dispensation from South Africa. A dispensation letter costs R420.

Samples sent to Onderstepoort: by air cargo only, through O.R. Tambo, with Onderstepoort's master import permit. Some tests run only on Wednesdays, so the samples should arrive by Tuesday.

The 2017 general certificate said "within 30 days of export" and allowed only IFAT + smear for Babesia. The 2022 document and the 2024 Canadian certificate count to the date of import and add ELISA and PCR.

07
Parasite treatment
before travel

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) prevention from the day the laboratory reports the negative result until departure, at the product's dosing intervals. Use one of: diethylcarbamazine (5–6 mg/kg daily), ivermectin (6 µg/kg monthly), milbemycin oxime (0.5 mg/kg monthly), moxidectin (3 µg/kg monthly), selamectin (6 mg/kg, Revolution) or the yearly ProHeart SR-12 injection. With ProHeart, nothing more is needed if the negative test falls within 11 months of the injection. Bring enough medicine for 6 more months of treatment in South Africa, where very few heartworm products are registered.

For dogs this is the general model IMP.DOG.GEN 05/22 CG, unless the exporting country has an agreed certificate that replaces it: the UK uses 6256EHC and Canada uses HA2123. It must be completed in English, on the exporting country's official certificate paper, by a veterinarian authorised by that country's veterinary authority, and signed and stamped by a government veterinarian, all within 10 days of departure. It also certifies: - residence; - the rabies vaccination; - the tests and treatments; - the exam; - that the dog comes from an area without veterinary restrictions for carnivore diseases; - that the dog had no contact with rabies cases; - that it travels in an IATA crate that is new or disinfected. The original certificate travels with the dog.

  • Preparation time 5 weeks, as for dogs from the no-quarantine list. Book the quarantine place before the permit application, and allow extra time if the station is full.
  • Mozambique: a normal permit and health certificate, the blood tests, arrival by air at O.R. Tambo or Cape Town, and quarantine. Dogs from Mozambique may not enter by road. — Department of Agriculture (formerly DALRRD) — Directorate Animal Health, Import Export Policy Unit
  • Other African countries (other than the neighbours and Malawi) are in the same position: permit, blood tests, air to Johannesburg or Cape Town, quarantine. Dogs from these countries cannot come by road through a neighbouring country. — Department of Agriculture (formerly DALRRD) — Directorate Animal Health, Import Export Policy Unit
  • No rabies exemption applies here. Every country exempt from the vaccination (Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the Channel Islands) is on the no-quarantine list.

Quarantine: at least 14 days at a government quarantine station

If the pet does not meet the rules: A dog that tests positive in quarantine for Brucella canis, Leishmania, Trypanosoma evansi or Babesia gibsoni is either returned to the exporting country or humanely euthanised, at the owner's expense.

The source says "approximately 14 days". The dog is released only after its retests are negative, so the stay can be longer. Quarantine fees were not found.

All quarantine, testing, treatment or return costs are paid by the owner.

A dog that tests positive for heartworm in quarantine can be treated there and retested, or returned.

Return trip to Thailand

Moderate for a returning pet (no separate returning-resident rule; standard import rules apply), about 5 weeks of preparation. No quarantine when the paperwork is in order.

  • Import permit — 7+ working days before arrival: In advance: apply to the Animal Quarantine Station (AQS) of the arrival airport for the notice of import approval (form R.6, called the "import permit") at least 7 working days before arrival — through the DLD e-Movement system or by e-mail (Suvarnabhumi: qsap_bkk_import@dld.go.th) with form R1/1, a copy of the owner's passport, a photo of the pet and an English vaccination record showing the microchip number, one PDF per animal. Mandatory in advance for air cargo. The permit is valid 60 days and comes with the health "Requirement" for the exporting country's vet.
  • Import permit: On arrival: for hand-carried pets the advance application does not apply — at the discretion of the port veterinarian the owner may apply at the AQS on arrival (Suvarnabhumi "option C") with the complete documents: original endorsed health certificate, original vaccination record or pet passport in English with the microchip number, form R1/1. Not recommended with a short connection; airlines may refuse boarding without a permit issued in advance.

Leaving South Africa with the pet

  • Before taking a pet out of South Africa, get the veterinary import permit for its return. Depending on where it went, it may have to go into quarantine at Kempton Park or Cape Town when it comes back.
  • Dogs going on a trip of up to 10 days to a country without South African quarantine can use the recreational permit: no blood tests on return.
